We need to talk about what happened Monday.
Landon Dickerson — three Pro Bowls, mauler, beard, load-bearing wall of the entire offense — went on his own radio show and announced two things. One: he's going to injured reserve. Two, and this is the part that matters: he said he "was a complete liability" in Week 1 and shouldn't have been out there.
A Philadelphia athlete. Publicly scouting himself. Harder than any of us would.
Do you know how rare that is? Most guys tear their ACL in half and tell reporters they're "day to day." This man watched his own tape, went on the radio, and cooked himself like he was a caller from Delco. That's the most Philly thing that's happened all season, and the season includes Moro Ojomo single-handedly saving the opener.
The actual bad news
Okay. Deep breath. Here's the damage.
Bone bruise in the right knee. Got rolled up on in camp weeks ago, tried to play through it, dragged it into Sunday against Washington, and it was — his words, not mine — a disaster. IR means at least four games. Best case, he's back for Week 6.
So the interior of the line just lost its meanest guy for a month, five days after we all watched the Commanders make the fourth quarter way more stressful than it needed to be.
You feel that? That little tightness in your chest? That's the O-line anxiety. It lives in all of us. It never fully leaves. It just waits.
Next man up is a fifth-round pick, because of course
Drew Kendall. Second-year guy, fifth-rounder in 2025, likely sliding into left guard Sunday in Nashville. Willie Lampkin's the other option.
I'm not going to pretend I've watched enough Drew Kendall to have a real opinion. Neither have you. Be honest. We're all about to become Drew Kendall experts in real time, together, one Jalen Hurts sack at a time.
Here's the thing though — this front office has been printing offensive linemen for a decade. Some guy nobody's heard of becomes a starter here and two years later he's getting paid like a franchise cornerstone. It's the one position where "next man up" isn't a coping mechanism in Philadelphia. It's a documented pattern.
That's what I'm telling myself. Repeatedly. At my desk. Out loud.
Week 2: Titans, in Nashville, hold my breath
The schedule gods gave us a soft landing at least. Tennessee is not exactly a murderers' row for a debuting left guard.
But I've watched this team long enough to know that "trap game after an emotional division win, on the road, with a backup on the interior" is exactly the recipe for me to be facedown on my living room floor at 3:45 on Sunday.
We're 1-0. The defense might be the best in football. The baseball team could clinch a playoff spot TOMORROW, in Washington, a city Philadelphia teams have spent this entire week beating up.
Everything is fine.
Say it with me: everything is fine.
(Four weeks, Landon. Heal fast. The tightness in my chest needs you.)
