Bryce Harper

That Game Was Nuts. Phils Make it 9 Straight

Be honest. You turned it off.

Down 4-0 in the ninth. Four hits all day. The bar was already switching TVs to the Eagles talk shows. Somebody in your group chat definitely typed "well, streaks end" and hit send.

And then the Phillies scored six runs with two outs and won 6-4.

Nine straight.

I need to lie down.

Let's Walk Through the Crime Scene

Harper leads off the ninth with a double. Fine. Cute. Nobody's buying it.

Two outs later, still down four. Down to the last STRIKE three times. Three.

Then it just... started happening. Four straight hits and a walk off Riley O'Brien — the Cardinals' ALL-STAR closer, by the way. Sosa clears the bases with a three-run double. De La Cruz ties it. And the Bank is now legally an earthquake zone.

Then Schwarber walks up.

459 Feet to Dead Center

You knew. Everyone knew. The Cardinals knew. O'Brien probably knew.

Schwarbomb No. 39 — most in the majors — to straight-up DEAD CENTER for the walk-off. That's his second walk-off homer in three days. The man has decided the Cardinals personally offended him and honestly, respect.

Sellout crowd. Sweep complete. Third straight sweep, if you're counting. We're all counting.

What This Actually Means

They're 73-58 now, a game and a half back of the Cubs for the second wild card, and playing like a team that genuinely does not believe games can end with them losing.

Two-out, six-run ninth against an All-Star closer is not a "good team wins a game" thing. That's an "October is going to be a problem" thing. That's a "this jawn might be different" thing. I'm not saying it. I'm just heavily implying it.

The Delusion Check

Nine straight in late August. Schwarber in full villain mode. Painter dealing. Bohm walking things off. Sosa and De La Cruz — the bench guys — playing hero. Every single lever this team pulls is working.

So naturally, I'm terrified. This is exactly the kind of stretch that makes you believe, and believing is how they get you. We've done this dance. We know how it ends.

But also... what if it doesn't this time?

We are so unbelievably back. Do not check on me in the NLDS.

Nine straight. Last strike three times. This team is gonna kill me and I'd like to thank them for it.
