Be honest.
On August 13 you said this season was over. You said it out loud. Maybe in the group chat. Maybe at the bar. 9½ back of Atlanta and you were already doing the "well, the Eagles start soon" cope.
Eight days later the Phillies have won six straight, just swept the Marlins out of the building, and the gap is 4½.
We are so back. (We are also one blown save from "blow it up." You know this. I know this. That's the deal.)
Aaron Nola Is Doing Aaron Nola Things Again
Wednesday night: seven innings, one run, five hits, eight strikeouts, zero walks.
Zero. Walks.
This is the Nola experience in its purest form. He spends half a season making you draft the "trade him" text, then rips off a stretch like this and you're deleting it mid-sentence. Seven innings with fewer than three runs allowed for the first time since the end of last season. The renaissance is real enough that national media is writing about it, which means they'll be wrong about it soon, but for now — let them.
Luis Arraez supplied the big swing, the bullpen didn't set anything on fire, and the Marlins went home 0-for-the-series. That's a professional sweep. We don't get many of those. Appreciate it.
The Standings, Because You're Going to Check Them Anyway
70-58. 4½ back of the Braves. Two games clear of San Diego in the wild card, three up on Arizona.
Here's the thing about 4½ in late August: it's close enough to be dangerous and far enough to be stressful. Which is the exact emotional zone this fanbase was built for. Nobody in this city has ever enjoyed a comfortable lead. We don't trust them. A 4½ game deficit with a six-game streak going? That's home cooking.
Cardinals come to town starting tonight. Win the series and this is officially A Thing. Lose two of three to St. Louis and the group chat goes dark for 48 hours. There is no in-between and there never has been.
Meanwhile, in Foxborough
The Eagles spent the week beating up on the Patriots in joint practices, because apparently A.J. Brown decided training camp was a personal insult. He showed out both days. The run game found its legs. The trash talk and shoving quota was met and exceeded, which — good. That's the standard.
Preseason game Saturday night in New England. Nobody important should play more than a series, and if Jake Elliott keeps struggling in practice I'm choosing not to think about it until it costs us three points in a real game, at which point I will think about nothing else.
Season opener: Commanders. Division game out of the gate. Thanksgiving game. Christmas Eve game. The schedule makers know what this team is.
The Vibe Check
So here's where we are: the Phillies are the hottest team in the National League the same week Eagles football comes back into focus.
This is the best week of the Philly sports calendar and the most dangerous. Because right now, everything is possible. October baseball at CBP. A repeat run. All of it, still on the table.
We might never lose again.
(We will lose Saturday. But still.)
Am I crazy, or does this streak feel different? Drop your take — and tell me how many games back is officially "panic over" territory, because I need a number.
