Eagles Training Camp 2026: The 5 Storylines Every Birds Fan Needs to Follow

It's the most wonderful time of the year. The Birds reported to the NovaCare Complex this week, which means real football is close enough to taste — and so is your first tailgate beer of the season. Before the pads start popping, here are the five storylines that are going to own your group chat between now and Week 1.

1. The Jalen Carter Standoff

Let's start with the one making everybody sweat. Carter showed up to camp, but there's still no extension, and after skipping voluntary OTAs and dodging team drills at minicamp, the beat writers have already slapped the "hold-in" label on him. Nobody in Philly doubts the man is a top-five defensive tackle when he's rolling. The question is whether the front office gets a deal done before this turns from awkward to ugly. Every practice report this summer starts with the same question: did Jalen Carter actually practice today?

2. Life After A.J. Brown

It still feels weird to type: A.J. Brown is a Patriot. DeVonta Smith is officially WR1 now — a job he's low-key been auditioning for since the Slay-and-release days — and the real camp battle is behind him. Rookie first-rounder Makai Lemon versus Dontayvion Wicks for WR2, with Hollywood Brown lurking in the mix. Meanwhile, clips of A.J. getting blanketed in New England's camp are already making the rounds on Eagles Twitter, and Philly fans are being exactly as gracious about it as you'd expect. Circle August 19: the Birds hold joint practices with the Patriots, and A.J. gets to line up across from the team that shipped him out. Bring popcorn. And a beer.

3. Jalen Hurts Breaks In (Another) New Offense

New offensive coordinator Sean Mannion makes it roughly the tenth different offensive setup of Hurts' career — the man has had more play-callers than most of us have had fantasy league names. The stakes are real, though: last year's offense played at the slowest pace in the entire NFL, and everybody from the WIP call-in lines to the national talking heads wants to see two things — faster tempo, and Hurts attacking the middle of the field. If camp reports start mentioning "pace" and "over the middle," that's your signal things are trending up.

4. The Big Fellas and Their Passports

The offensive line storyline this year comes with a twist: Cam Jurgens and Landon Dickerson both reportedly went to Colombia for stem cell treatments this offseason, and Lane Johnson is working his way back too. When your interior line's health plan involves international travel, you pay attention. Tyler Steen is out to finally lock down the right guard job, and the depth battles — backup center, swing tackle — matter more than anyone wants to admit. As always in Philly: the season goes as the trenches go.

5. The Little Battles That Decide January

The under-the-radar stuff: Tanner McKee reportedly outplayed 38-year-old Andy Dalton all spring in the backup QB competition. Tank Bigsby quietly averaged nearly 6 yards a carry last year and people want to see him actually get the rock. And Jake Elliott — a man with two Super Bowl rings' worth of goodwill — is coming off a 74% field goal season, so every kick in front of the camp crowds is getting watched like a Wawa hoagie in a shared fridge.

Camp Is Open. Act Accordingly.

Training camp means the countdown to tailgate season is officially on. Whether you're heading to an open practice at the Linc or just arguing about the WR2 battle from a barstool, make sure you look the part — the football collection is stocked, the new arrivals just dropped, and if your gameday fridge situation needs an upgrade, we've got beer stuff for that too.

Go Birds. See you in the parking lot.
