Quick vibe check.
On May 3rd this team was 9-19, we'd just fired the manager, and half the city was ready to boo the ballpark itself. Since then? Best stretch of baseball anyone in the NL has played. 54-43. Two games back of the Braves. Holding a Wild Card spot with room to spare.
The All-Star Game came to the Bank, six Phillies were on the roster, Marsh started in the outfield, and Wheeler spent the whole week striking out fourteen guys out of spite.
We are so back.
And that's exactly why the next two and a half weeks scare me more than the first month did. Because the deadline is Monday, August 3, and this roster — as currently built — is a really good team with three very obvious holes. Dombrowski has until 6pm that day to turn "really good" into "get the parade route ready."
Here's the shopping list.
Move 1: A Right-Handed Bat. Any Right-Handed Bat. Please.
Let's just say the uncomfortable part out loud.
Our right-handed hitters are last in the National League in batting average. Last. The only righty on the roster with a wRC+ above 80 is Derek Hill, a guy we acquired five minutes ago. Every lefty reliever in baseball sees Schwarber–Harper–Marsh and starts warming up like it's his birthday.
And the one righty bat who was supposed to fix this — Adolis García — tore his lat and is done for the year. Season-ending surgery. Gone.
This is the whole deadline. In October, teams will stack lefties against us for nine straight innings, and right now our counterpunch is hopes and prayers.
The names out there:
Jo Adell (Angels). The fit everybody keeps circling, and for good reason. 27 years old, 13 bombs already this year, 37 last year, and the Angels are 13 games under .500 because they're the Angels. He's the guy. Go get the guy.
Isaac Paredes (Astros). Righty power, 114 OPS+, and a club option for 2027 — which also quietly answers our third base question for next year. This is the "smart podcast guy" pick. It's also just correct.
Taylor Ward (Orioles). Five homers, but a .389 OBP. Stick him in front of Schwarber and Harper and let him clog the bases while the big fellas do violence.
Seiya Suzuki (Cubs). Would be perfect. The Cubs would have to collapse and sell first, and they're currently half a game ahead of us. So, you know. Root for chaos.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (D-backs). Hitting .216 with 2 homers. Bob Nightengale keeps bringing him up. Bob, we're good. Thanks though.
Move 2: A Starter Who Can Get Us Through August Alive
Wheeler is on a full revenge tour — 9-1, ERA in the low 2s, hanging 14 Ks on people as a "reminder." Him coming back from thoracic outlet surgery and doing THIS is the single most Philly athlete thing imaginable: get disrespected, become a problem.
But be honest about the rest of it. Sánchez has a 9.58 ERA in July. The back of this rotation has been held together with tape and vibes, and you do not want October's bullpen gassed because August's rotation couldn't finish the fifth.
Robbie Ray (Giants) is the clean fit — a rental lefty who's been dealing, on a team going nowhere. Luis Castillo (Mariners) is the buy-low version with an extra year of control if Seattle wants to move money. Either works. "Neither" does not.
Move 3: One More Late-Inning Arm (Ideally a Lefty)
Duran made the All-Star team. The back of the bullpen is fine. The bridge to the back of the bullpen? That's where playoff games go to die, and everyone reading this has personally witnessed it.
Aroldis Chapman (Red Sox) is 38 years old, still throwing 97, with a 1.39 ERA — the world's scariest senior citizen. Yuki Matsui (Padres) is a lefty with a 2.01 ERA on a long, cheap deal. Brooks Raley (Mets) would be great, except trading with the Mets means paying the in-division tax and, worse, saying thank you to the Mets.
The Catch (There's Always a Catch)
The farm system is thin. Abel's gone. Tait's gone. Dombrowski has spent five years treating prospects like Wawa gift cards, and the cupboard reflects that. We probably can't fix all three holes with premium moves.
So if it's pick two? Bat first. Bullpen second. Pray Sánchez's July was a blip.
And here's the part I'll only say once: this core is old, the CBA fight is coming, and this might legitimately be the last full swing of this era. Harper, Wheeler, Schwarber — this group has given us everything except the only thing that matters.
You don't hold prospects back in a season like that. You push the chips in.
Do it, Dave. Whatever it costs. We didn't survive 9-19, a managerial funeral, and a June heat dome at the Bank to get cute in August.
Get the righty bat. Get the arm. Get the parade.
